Enable Marketing Messages on WhatsApp - Better Delivery
Enable WhatsApp Marketing Messages Lite from ChatMaxima for higher delivery rates on promotional broadcasts, campaigns, and re-engagement messages.
Overview
WhatsApp offers an enhanced delivery channel for marketing campaigns called Marketing Messages Lite. When it is enabled on your WhatsApp number, WhatsApp paces your sends intelligently, picks the best delivery route, and helps more of your messages actually reach inboxes.
In WhatsApp's own tests, Marketing Messages Lite has delivered up to 9% more messages than the standard marketing send. This guide walks you through what it is, what you need, and how to switch it on from ChatMaxima.
When You Should Enable It
Marketing Messages Lite is worth turning on if you send:
- Promotional campaigns and offers
- Re-engagement broadcasts to past customers
- Seasonal sale announcements
- Product launch updates
- Any broadcast that uses a Marketing-category template
You do not need to enable it for:
- Order confirmations, OTPs, ticket updates (Utility templates)
- One-to-one replies inside the 24-hour customer window
WhatsApp automatically routes only your marketing templates through the enhanced channel once it is enabled.
Prerequisites
Before you begin, ensure you have:
| Requirement | What it means |
|---|---|
| Cloud API number | The number is fully migrated to Cloud API, not on the WhatsApp Business App |
| Business verified | Your business has passed verification in Meta Business Settings |
| Valid payment method | A working card or bank account is attached for messaging charges |
| Number registered and connected | The number shows as Active in your ChatMaxima channels list |
Note: If your number is connected through Coexistence (linked to the WhatsApp Business App), it is not eligible for Marketing Messages Lite. Migrate to Cloud API first.
Step 1: Open the Marketing Messages Screen
- Log in to ChatMaxima
- Go to Settings > Channels
- Find your WhatsApp number in the list
- Click Actions > Enable Marketing Messages
A window opens and checks the live status of your number with WhatsApp.
Step 2: Read the Status
You will see three pieces of information:
- Status - where you are in the process (Eligible, Onboarded, etc.)
- Payment Method - whether your payment is in good standing
- WhatsApp Business Account ID - for reference
A coloured message at the top tells you in plain language what to do next.
Status Values
| Status | What it means | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Onboarded | Marketing Messages Lite is already active | Nothing - you are set |
| Eligible | Prerequisites met, but not opted in yet | Send the onboarding invite, or enable in WhatsApp Manager |
| Ineligible | A prerequisite is unmet (verification, payment, region) | Fix the missing requirement |
| Pending Valid Payment Method | Blocked by a payment issue | Add a valid payment method in WhatsApp Manager |
Step 3: Pick Your Path
If Status is Onboarded
You are already set. Marketing Messages Lite is active on this number. Every marketing broadcast you send from now on uses the enhanced channel automatically. There is nothing further to do.
If Status is Eligible and Payment is Valid
Click the green Send Onboarding Invite button.
WhatsApp will email the admins of your Meta Business Account a link to accept the Marketing Messages terms. As soon as one of them accepts:
- ChatMaxima receives the confirmation automatically
- Your status flips to Onboarded
- Your next marketing broadcast goes through the enhanced channel
You do not need to come back and click anything.
If Status is Eligible but Payment Shows Invalid
WhatsApp has detected a problem with your payment method (expired card, declined bank, billing on hold, etc.). The invite button is hidden because the invitation will not succeed until payment is fixed.
To fix it:
- Click Open Meta WhatsApp Manager in the modal
- Go to your payment settings
- Add a new card or update the existing one
- Wait a few minutes for WhatsApp to verify it
- Come back to ChatMaxima and re-open the Marketing Messages screen
The status should now show payment as Valid and you can proceed.
If Status is Ineligible
Something in your prerequisites is incomplete. The most common reasons:
| Reason | Fix |
|---|---|
| Your number is still on the WhatsApp Business App (Coexistence) | Complete migration to Cloud API |
| Business verification not completed | Submit business documents in Meta Business Settings |
| Your country or region is not yet supported | No action - wait for WhatsApp to expand availability |
The modal will tell you which of these applies and point you to the right place to fix it.
If You See "Invitation Already Sent"
WhatsApp will only send one Marketing Messages invitation at a time. If you or a colleague already triggered it earlier, ChatMaxima will let you know.
Check the admin email inbox of your Meta Business Account, or open Meta WhatsApp Manager, accept the pending invitation, and you are done. Your ChatMaxima status will update automatically within a few minutes.
If You See "Terms Already Accepted at Business Level"
This means your Meta business is already approved for Marketing Messages, but the specific number you are enabling has not been switched on yet. This happens when you have multiple WhatsApp numbers and onboarded one of them earlier.
Open Meta WhatsApp Manager, find the number, and turn on Marketing Messages for it from the number's settings. ChatMaxima will pick up the change automatically.
After It Is Enabled
Once your number shows Onboarded:
- No code change needed. Your existing broadcasts continue to work, they just deliver better.
- Marketing templates only. Only templates in the Marketing category route through the enhanced channel. Utility and authentication templates use the regular path.
- Same pricing. Marketing Messages Lite does not change WhatsApp's conversation pricing. It only improves delivery quality.
- You can opt out. If you change your mind, you can disable Marketing Messages from Meta WhatsApp Manager. ChatMaxima will reflect the change.
Best Practices
- Send to opted-in audiences only. Marketing Messages Lite improves delivery, but it does not protect against complaints. Always send to recipients who have opted in.
- Use clear and relevant template content. WhatsApp's pacing algorithm rewards templates that get high engagement and low blocks.
- Throttle large broadcasts. Even with Marketing Messages Lite, spreading sends over time produces better results than bursting thousands of sends at once.
- Monitor delivery rates in Reports. Compare delivery rates before and after enabling to confirm the improvement on your audience.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Marketing Messages Lite cost extra?
No. WhatsApp's standard conversation pricing applies. There is no additional fee from WhatsApp or ChatMaxima.
Will my existing templates still work?
Yes. You do not need to recreate any templates. Existing marketing templates automatically use the enhanced delivery once your number is Onboarded.
Does it affect my Utility or Authentication templates?
No. Only Marketing category templates are routed through Marketing Messages Lite. Utility and Authentication templates use the standard Cloud API path as before.
How long does the invitation take to be accepted?
The email reaches your Meta admins immediately. The actual acceptance and status update typically take a few minutes. If you do not see the status change within 15 minutes, refresh the Marketing Messages screen in ChatMaxima.
Can I opt out later?
Yes. Open Meta WhatsApp Manager, navigate to the WhatsApp number settings, and disable Marketing Messages. ChatMaxima will reflect the change on the next refresh.
What if my country is not supported?
WhatsApp is expanding Marketing Messages Lite to new regions regularly. If your country is not yet supported, your status will show as Ineligible. There is no workaround, you will need to wait for WhatsApp to expand availability.
What happens to my broadcasts during the change?
Nothing breaks. While your status is Eligible (not yet Onboarded), broadcasts continue to send through the standard channel. Once you switch to Onboarded, future broadcasts pick up the new channel automatically. There is no service interruption.
Can I see this in WhatsApp Manager too?
Yes. In Meta WhatsApp Manager, navigate to your WhatsApp Business Account > Phone Numbers. Each number shows its Marketing Messages status. The same information appears in ChatMaxima.
Troubleshooting
Status Stays Ineligible After I Fixed the Issue
- Re-open the Marketing Messages screen - ChatMaxima re-checks the live status every time it opens
- Wait 5 to 10 minutes for WhatsApp to propagate the change on their side
- Confirm your business verification status in Meta Business Settings
- Confirm your payment method shows as active in Meta WhatsApp Manager > Billing
Send Onboarding Invite Keeps Failing
- Check the friendly message displayed in the modal - it tells you the specific reason
- If it says "invitation already sent", check your Meta admin email inbox
- If it says "terms already accepted", enable Marketing Messages directly from WhatsApp Manager for this specific number
- If it mentions a payment issue, fix payment in WhatsApp Manager first
